Arrival to Higham Lane North Academy

All pupils should arrive via the main gate between 08:20 and 08:33. The morning club is open from 08:00. At the morning club, pupils will be able to read, use the computers, complete activities or play quiet board games. If your child is arriving before 08:25 this is the only area that is supervised, and so to ensure that your child is safe on the site, they must go to the Library.

There will be other activities available on some mornings and these will be confirmed in due course. Depending on staffing and weather conditions, further sports facilities may also be used from 08:00. We will let pupils know in advance of this.

We will always greet every child in the morning so that pupils feel welcomed and included at HLNA. This will also give your child’s champion (their form tutor) a chance to ensure that they are focused for the day and to sort out any potential uniform/equipment issues before we begin our main morning activity.

Registration and Morning activity – Welcome to the Day

We will begin most mornings with a focus on one of our school values so that we can support them to be focused on doing the right thing during each day. This helps to remind them of how they can be successful. Following this, during most mornings we will all be reading. We know the link between strong academic outcomes and literacy and reading skills – and we know that if we practice reading every day, ensuring that pupils’ literacy skills constantly develop through this deliberate practice of reading, then we are helping them to become the successful learners, and therefore citizens, that they want to be. Some children will be supported outside the classroom during this time during their reading. As a parent you will be informed of this, if it applies to your child. We will also have a weekly assembly which will be led by SLT/Head of Year and will be closely aligned to our school values.

Movement matters

It is your child’s right to feel safe in school at all times.  We know that in schools many children say they feel unsafe on school corridors when they are moving to and between lessons. This is when corridors can get busy and overcrowded, and when unsupervised, this is when pushing and shoving can arise which leads to not only injuries, but of children feeling unsafe at school.

Therefore, to ensure that your child is safe at these key points of movement during the day, we will do the following:

  • When the whole school is gathered together such as at the start of the day, break and lunchtime, SLT and duty staff will gather each year group together in designated areas, and ensure that each class is dismissed in an orderly way and supervised by their class teacher. During the morning welcome this will be by their form tutor.

  • SLT, teaching and non-teaching staff will always be visible on corridors at lesson changeover.   Between lessons 1 and 2, and 4 and 5, teachers will stand at their classroom door to dismiss pupils, checking that the corridor is clear before they dismiss their class. Teachers will be at their classroom door to meet and greet their next class.  Our staff will be visible and proactive in helping to ensure that your child feels safe and ready for their next stage of learning through the day.

Before school

  • If you are coming to Morning Club, you must go straight to the Library, entering via the external library doors, from the courtyard.  The main internal doors to the school by Reception are for staff only before 0830.  This is so that we know where all pupils are if you are on site before 0820.
  • If you are going to the North Bridge, you must enter via the external entrance at the side of the school building.    You cannot enter via the Reception area before 0830.  This is so that we know where all pupils are if you are on site before 0820.
  • If you arrive at 0820, you make your way to the sports zone or courtyard. This is where you can socialize sensibly with friends.   We want you to relax and enjoy yourselves with friends when not in lessons, but this always involves being sensible and compassionate to everyone around you.    You can either sit in the canopy areas or stand with your friends.
  • If you need to use the toilet facilities, you will use the toilets by the dining hall and access them through the external doors by the courtyard.   There is no need to be in the school building beyond these areas.  This is so that we can keep you safe.

Punctuality matters

Being conscientious and confident means that we arrive to school on time.  We must train ourselves to be on time so that it becomes a successful habit for life.  School is good training for what we will experience when we work as adults.    Successful people are always punctual for the following reasons:

  • Maximized learning and productivity - When you’re punctual, you maximize your time. You are giving yourself the best chance to be successful in life being present in school gaining key knowledge and skills.
  •  Respect for others – it is showing respect to teachers and the school as they have planned the day for you to be a successful person and learner.  This helps to build trust and positive connections.
  • Reliability and Responsibility-  Being punctual indicates that you're responsible and reliable. It shows that you take your commitments seriously and can be counted on to meet deadlines and attend appointments as promised.  It shows that you are disciplined and have good work ethics, qualities that others value.
  • Opportunities and Success -  Punctuality can lead to more opportunities. People who consistently show up on time are often seen as more dependable, which can open doors for personal and professional growth.
  • Time Management Skills - Being punctual usually means you’ve managed your time well. It helps develop a routine, promotes better organization, and can reduce stress from last-minute rushes.

How to be punctual

  • Pack your bag the evening before, checking that you have everything ready for the next day, including books and equipment.  This will save you time in the morning.
  • Lay out what your uniform for the next day the evening before.  This will save you time in the morning.
  • Set a regular alarm in the morning that gives you plenty of time to get ready.  You can even set it ten minutes before you need to, this gives you some buffer time if there is anything unexpected that happens during the morning that might make you late.
  • Set out a time that you will leave the house and stick to it!  If you are walking with friends make sure that you all take collective responsibility to meet at a set time and stick to it!
  • Speak to a member of staff if there is a genuine reason that might make you late on an occasional day.
  • If you are not at school by 0835 a same day break detention will apply.
  • We have a ‘No Excuses’ approach to being late to any lesson.  Being late to a lesson is disrespectful to our teachers and school who are trying their best to teach you knowledge and skills to be successful.  It also disrupts the learning for other pupils in your class as the teacher has to stop the lesson so that you can join the class which is also disrespectful.  This is not being conscientious or compassionate and is not making us proud because we always do the right thing.   If there are an issues regarding a lesson, you can always talk to us and we will work together to overcome any barriers you may feel that you are facing.  Ultimately, we will attend all of our lessons so that we can gain knowledge and skills that will make us happy and successful as adults.

Break time

  • Make your way to the sports zone or courtyard to enjoy your break.  If you want to purchase refreshments from the dining hall, you will line up alongside the outside wall, under the canopy.  This is the only entrance to the dining hall at break and lunchtimes.
  • If you need to use the toilet facilities, you will use access them through the external doors by the courtyard.   There is no need to be in the school building beyond these areas.  This is so that we can keep you safe.
  • You may use the Library if you wish to for Wellbeing Club.   You will enter via the external doors by the courtyard.
  • When the movement matters bell goes, you will make your way to your HOUSE line on the courtyard and your teacher will help to escort you safely to your lessons where you will walk with pace and purpose.

Lunchtime and use of the dining hall

At lunchtime this year, you will be able to use either the dining hall or sit outside on the benches to eat your food.   If you are buying food from the dining hall you may also eat it outside on the benches.   This is a luxury and privilege so that you can sit with your friends, regardless of whether they are purchasing food or bringing packed lunches.   All pupils take collective responsibility to ensure that all cutlery and trays go back to the dining hall and all litter is placed in the bins.   We are so fortunate and grateful to have a wonderful school and collectively we all look after this out of respect to the people who built it for us.

  • When the bell goes for lunch, make your way to the courtyard.  If you are packed lunches, find a bench outside to eat, or if you want to eat in the dining hall, line up in QUEUE A where a member of staff will then seat you accordingly.  You may be told to go and chat in the Courtyard and come back when called, this is to help make the lunchtime experience more harmonious and happier for everyone.     We are respectful and polite to all lunchtime staff.   They are part of the HLNA family, they are our colleagues, and so we treat everyone how we wish to be treated
  • If you are purchasing food from the dining hall, line up in QUEUE B.   We will be polite and respectful and line up sensibly.   Take your food to your table and eat and socialize with others as if you are in a restaurant.   Successful people are always polite to others, using STEPS and SHAPE where appropriate.
  • Daily topic for discussion—this is a time to catch up and socialize with friends and to practice good social skills.  We will always give you a daily topic to discuss.  You don’t have to converse about this, you are free to talk about what interests you if it is kind and compassionate, but practicing the art of small talk and interacting with others is a key skill for life.  Successful people know how to do this well so we will give you these daily opportunities to do this too.    Remember to tell a member of staff what you discussed with your friends!
  • When you have finished eating, take all litter with you.  We never leave anything behind on our tables.   It is not the responsibility of our lunchtime staff to pick up our litter.  Their job is to help keep tables clean by wiping them, which we are grateful for.  Their job is not to take away your trays or litter.
  • Place all rubbish in the bins provided.  We must be always conscientious and proud because we always do the right thing.  Successful people always put rubbish in litter bins.    It is our job to look after our school environment out of respect for the people who built our school for us, and for everyone who enjoys the facilities every day.
  • If you are attending a lunchtime club, always eat your lunch first and then go to the club.   If you are purchasing food from the dining hall, you will be given a lunchtime pass so that you can do this as quickly as possible and make your way to your activity.
